AMY TRUE

Amy True has been delivering a politicised fusion of hip hop, jazz and soul since the early 2000s. Her sound is a steady stream of rebellious rap delivered atop soulful melodic hooks; using lyrics to conscientiously provoke a shift in her audience's perspective.

Dealing with contemporary issues while continually doing the shadow work of everyday life, Amy True has been described as “one of the most influential and talked about personalities in the Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz scene”. With new music coming out in 2022, Amy True has further refined her art after a period of inner work and expansion. Her long awaited release will touch on raising awareness about homophobic attacks, police harassment, Covid, and self love. Hearing Amy True create a mature mood for musical conversations to flow while riding on a groove of her own.

Since being named ‘the one to watch’ in 2010 by the Mobo Awards, Amy True became known for her debut projects ‘Subject of My Environment’ and ‘Tryna Get By’ before joining People’s Army*. She later became a member of ‘Caxton Press’, winning Best HipHop Album for ‘Shame The Devil’ by Wordplay Magazine, before focusing back on her solo career. In 2015, she published her much acclaimed album ‘Eleven’ showcasing Amy True’s unique crossover of genres, unifying old school hip hop with features from renowned jazz musicians including Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon Jones (Ezra Collective) and Shabaka Hutchins. In 2019, she collaborated with Dele Sosimi to celebrate the Black President Fela Kuti, and has been backed by UK Rappers Rodney P and the late Ty for her talent and craft.

Throughout her career, Amy True has continued to place herself at the forefront of socially conscious movements. Her back catalogue is packed with collaborations alongside fellow advocates of change. In 2017 she put down vocals for dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah’s album ‘Revolutionary Minds’ and became part of his live tour band. She has supported acts such as Public Enemy (“Amy True is so dope” quote by Chuck D), Mos Def and Immortal Technique. And has been featured on albums with hip hop artist Akala, and iconic rap group Asian Dub Foundation. Such collaborations reflect Amy True’s philosophy, as a member of the ‘*People’s Army Movement’, of working together to provide unity, understanding and positive social change through music, arts, and education.
